A solar panel consists of solar cells, also known as photovoltaic cells, that convert solar radiation into an electrical current to create power. In a process known as the photovoltaic effect, photons from the sun hit the solar panel and are absorbed by semiconducting materials in the solar cells such as silicon, arsenic, and selenium. This results in the ejection of electrons that are then transferred between bands in the material to build voltage between electrodes. The resulting electricity is captured for a variety of uses.
