Blue Planet Earth
The blue color of Earth's atmosphere owes to the fact that blue light has a short wavelength and is easily scattered by oxygen atoms, making it very visible. Other lights like reds or yellows have longer wavelengths that pass right through the ogyxen with little effect. The blue we see from outer space, however, is mostly due to the oceans that cover 71% of the surface, lending the nickname of the Blue Planet. Earth is also known by the Latin Terra.
