The Japanese Persimmon, or kaki, is the most widely cultivated species of persimmon. The botanical name is diospyros kaki; diospyros meaning "fruit of the gods" in Greek. The species is native to China, where it is known as shizi and has a history of use dating to more than 2,000 years. After spreading into other parts of east Asia, the fruit was introduced to southern Europe, California, and Brazil in the 1800s.
