Basilica di Santa Maria Novella
The facade of the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella (New Basilica of Saint Mary) in Florence, Italy. Architect and polymath Leon Battista Alberti completed the facade from 1456 to 1470. The church itself was constructed from 1246 to 1360 on the old 9th century site of the Santa Maria delle Vigne oratory. This rebirth of the site lends it the name Novella (new).
